Our Story
In response to the 1949 earthquake in Chios, the Society was established in 1950 by members of the Chian diaspora to support the island’s recovery from the widespread devastation.
Our Founding
The Northern Chios Society of Pelineon “Saint Markella” of Upstate New York was founded in 1950 by Greek immigrants from Chios and members of the diaspora community. It was created in response to the devastating 1949 earthquake in Chios, when families abroad came together to support relief and recovery efforts on the island.
What began as a small effort of solidarity grew into a lasting organization dedicated to preserving the traditions, faith, and cultural heritage of Chios. Over time, the Society became a central gathering point for Chians and their descendants in the United States.
In the late 1970s, members came together once again to establish a permanent home for the community. Through their efforts, land was purchased in Upstate New York and a chapel dedicated to Saint Markella of Chios was built and inaugurated in 1979.
Today, the Society continues its mission of strengthening community ties, preserving Greek Orthodox traditions, and honoring the heritage of Chios for future generations.
